Yesterday, the 11th Circuit Court of appeals in Atlanta, Georgia blocked two more parts of the Alabama anti-immigrant law. Human Rights Watch noted the decision as "a significant victory not just for immigrants but for the rights of all residents of Alabama." Their press release gives a little more background.

Today in Atlanta a three judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit will hear arguments over Alabama's and Georgia's anti-immigration laws. Breaking news today on the legal front regarding the Alabama immigration law. The Department of Justice has asked the 11th Circuit to block implementation of the law: The federal government asked an appeals court on Friday to halt an Alabama immigration law considered by many as the toughest in the United States, saying it invites discrimination against foreign-born citizens and legal immigrants.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Southern Poverty Law Center, and several other groups are taking Georgia's new "show-me-your-papers" law to court, filing a federal lawsuit yesterday to halt provisions that would allow local law enforcement to check for immigration papers and require many businesses to do the same with employees.
