Here's the story: on Tuesday, the FBI arrested four East Haven Police Department officers and charged them with conspiracy, false arrest, excessive force, and obstruction of justice. Over many years, it seems, these officers have been abusing minorities, especially Hispanics, and then trying to cover it up.

"Yes, you can! Yes, you can!"
Those were the words that were chanted at the NCLR conference as Obama said that he couldn't just bypass Congress and change the laws on his own. The truth is that he actually can. Clearly, he's not getting the message that on immigration, some bold, executive action is desperately needed.

Last week, as Pedro—an orphan who grew up American and dreams of serving in the Marine Corps —faced imminent deportation from the country he hopes to serve.
Well, Pedro's community bolted into action -- and so did you. Last week, over ten thousand faxes were sent on Pedro's behalf, and this activism made a huge difference.

Pedro Gutierrez, an orphan who grew up in Arizona, was brought here by his grandmother when he was only 7 years old. Though she passed away when Pedro was still a child, Pedro persevered and, with the support of his community, went on to graduate high school. Like so many other talented, young undocumented immigrants, he dreams of joining the Marines; however, despite having full support of a military recruiter, this young dreamer could be deported to Mexico – where he has no family or friends -- today.

On a cold and dreary Sunday evening, dozens of DREAMers and their supporters gathered together on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to sing slightly altered holiday carols – all with a witty DREAM Act theme. Watch as Eric Byler, of 9500 Liberty and the Coffee Party fame, interviews a number of attendees on that faithful Sunday evening:

With the Senate poised to vote on the DREAM Act before the close of this lame duck session, dozens of prominent clergy – including bishops, national leaders and clergy from numerous key states–converged on the nation's Capitol today to press Senators to vote in favor of the DREAM Act. These faith leaders, who have led the faith community's ongoing efforts to reform our broken immigration system, held an emergency prayer summit and "Jericho March" along with over 100 DREAM students, praying and singing as they encircled the U.S. Senate Office Buildings and proclaimed that now is the time for Senators to show moral courage and break down the barriers obstructing passage of the DREAM Act.

Yesterday evening DREAM Act supporters, including young immigrants and allies from across the country, gathered at the symbolic Lincoln Memorial -- the spot where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous speech -- to sing holiday carols. Marchers carried candles and an image of the Virgin Mary - December 12th is El Dia De La Virgen Guadalupe, after all.
DREAM leader Gaby Pacheco led a procession to the National Christmas Tree at the White House, where caroling continued. Spirits and hopes were high, despite a light drizzle of rain, that several key Senators will have a change of heart and do the right thing by voting "Yes" on the DREAM Act in this holiday season where we celebrate love, compassion, and peace.

Last Friday we asked for help to make sure that Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his volunteer "army" would not be intimidating Latino voters out of participating in the cornerstone of our democracy: voting. We asked our supporters to send a message to the DOJ to send monitors down to Maricopa County. Guess what? The Department of Justice responded swiftly, and will be sending election monitors to Arizona.

Here's the great news: Marlen was just granted what's known as "deferred action" for one year. She was scheduled to be deported on August 8th, but after a campaign initiated by DREAM Act activists, Marlen was allowed to stay with her family for another year. We asked you to fax DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, and you came through. In just 24 hours, we passed our goal of having 5,000 people fax DHS. As of today, you've sent nearly 20,000 faxes to the agency!

Today is the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Anaheim, yet Arizona's new immigration law is sending tremors through America's favorite past-time. Two months after a coalition of major organizations, bloggers, and civil rights groups sent a formal letter to MLB commissioner Bud Selig, telling him it's time to move the game out of Phoenix to protect the sport's Latino players and fans who would be targeted under the Draconian new law, baseball fans from coast to coast have joined together in protest.
