The language in this mailer is similar to an ad Angle released last month, also calling Reid the "best friend an illegal alien ever had." The ad featured menacing men with flashlights walking along a chain-link fence beside images of innocent-looking families and working people. "Illegals sneaking across our border, putting Americans' safety and jobs at risk," the ad's narrator intoned.

In Nevada, Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle has released one of the most offensive television ads of the 2010 election cycle. With only four weeks to Nov. 2, that's saying a lot. The controversial ad uses immigration as a wedge issue, attacking Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) for his support of federal immigration reform legislation, including (one assumes) the DREAM Act.

Welcome back from the Labor Day weekend! Here's what you may have missed while tending to the grill: Straight from the Wild Wild Southwest, Arizona's Gov. finally fesses up to her "headless bodies" fib. See Jan Brewer Admits She Was Wrong About Beheadings (via Think Progress): "Months after initially making the claim say that undocumented immigrants were beheading people in the Arizona desert, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) has finally admitted that she was wrong." Ya think?

The top story in the Spanish-language press today is the lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against Maricopa County (AZ) Sheriff Joe Arpaio for refusing to comply with a DOJ civil-rights investigation. The press also reviews Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's disastrous debate performance.

It's unfortunate that the Justice Department has to take this step and force Arpaio to comply with a federal civil rights investigation, but we commend the Department for doing so. If Sheriff Arpaio truly has nothing to hide, he should have no problem turning over the documents in question.

According to the Washington Post: Justice Department officials in Washington have issued a rare threat to sue Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio if he does not cooperate with their investigation of whether he discriminates against Hispanics. The "Model Sheriff" for Arizona's SB 1070, Joe Arpaio, has a record of failed crime fighting tactics, civil rights abuses and creating terror in the communities he's supposed to protect.
Today, we here at America's Voice Education Fund released a new report detailing the long, disturbing and ineffective record of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, AZ.

At a time in which the Arizona GOP has made it acceptable for American citizens to go on witch-hunts for undocumented immigrants (i.e. suing police if they don't profile people based on shoes, accents, and skin color), comes this highly disturbing story out of Utah. The New York Times' Kirk Johnson reports, in "'Immigrant' List Sets Off Fears:" A list of 1,300 Utah residents described as illegal immigrants has sown fear among some Hispanics here, and prompted an investigation into its origins and dissemination.

Yesterday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Anaheim, California, was met with protests asking that the 2011 game be moved out of Phoenix due to Arizona's passage of SB 1070 -- but the game is staying put for now. Meanwhile, a list sent to officials in Utah that claims to name 1,300 undocumented immigrants has the Latino community terrified.

Today in the Spanish-language press, actions in support of the DREAM Act heat up across the country, while Arizona business owners have more backbone than Democratic governors in standing up to Arizona's SB 1070. Meanwhile, hate crimes in Staten Island, NY have immigrants afraid to walk the streets, and the Mexican consulate is getting involved.

It continues to amaze me how much TV coverage a couple hundred to a few thousand tea party or anti-immigration reform supporters garner any time they so much as sneeze in a public space. When compared to mainstream coverage of events with tens of thousands—or even hundreds of thousands-- of immigration reform supporters, it's absurd to say the least.
As AZ Central reports, last weekend's rally with former Representative Tom Tancredo, in support of Arizona's controversial new immigration law, drew about 1/5 of the expected crowd--a paltry 2,000 people.

Last night, Rachel Maddow exposed the network operating behind the Arizona's new SB 1070 bill – notoriously known as legislation that promotes racial profiling.
From the neo-nazi-hugging Arizona senator, Russel Pearce, who introduced the bill, to the Federation of American Immigration Reform -- designated as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center -- who wrote it (and could profit off of it!), Maddow takes a close look at the operatives behind this anti-immigrant legislation

But she did sign Arizon'a harshest profiling bill yet, S.B. 1070, into law today. So, why is she telling cops to profile people based on "reasonable suspicion" they could be undocumented, if she doesn't know what that looks like? Watch it.

Last night, in an exchange with Charles Krauthamer on the O'Reilly Factor, host Bill O'Reilly claimed that Mexico was invading the United States and that President Barack Obama should deploy the military to stop it. O'Reilly goes on to ridiculously claim that the threat Mexico poses to the Unites States is similar to the threat that North Korea poses to its southern neighbor.

Monday night I listened in on a organizing call for leaders of NumbersUSA, the "MoveOn" of the anti-immigrant lobby. The purpose of the call was to figure out how to throw a wrench in the upcoming grassroots mobilization (taking place in DC on March 21st) for real immigration reform. Already, tens of thousands of people have signed up to march to D.C. to demand economic justice for all Americans and an end to our nation's abysmal immigration crisis— so naturally the anti-immigrant folks are freaking out.

A group called the American Principles Project aims to promote conservative values among Hispanics and defend comprehensive immigration reform among those same ultraconservatives who have rejected it in the past. According to EFE, Alfonso Aguilar, who served under the Bush administration as director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), said that "immigration reform is the issue keeping Latinos from supporting the conservative movement." To bring them into the fold, Aguilar said, it is "extremely important" that legalizing undocumented immigrants become a policy and messaging priority for conservatives in the future.

Two editorials in La Opinión in the last few days have discussed immigration reform: "No more empty words" ("No más palabras vacías") and "The moment for reform" ("El momento para la reforma"). The votes cast for candidates committed to immigration reform were key in winning elections for them, and millions of working people sustained their hopes.

You might remember Krikorian from when he was named Worst Person in the World by Keith Olberman for trying to push some of that "Anglo-conformity" on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor for pronouncing her name too ethnically: "Deferring to people's own pronunciation of their names should obviously be our first inclination, but there ought to be limits. Putting the emphasis on the final syllable of Sotomayor is unnatural in English..."
But Krikorian isn't the only leader of the anti-immigrant movement who's felt the need to weigh in on the Haitian tragedy. After President Obama and a bipartisan group of Members of Congress granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitian immigrants living in the United States, Congressman Steve King (R-IA) argued that Haitian immigrants in the U.S. should be deported (in order to "help with the relief effort").
