In April 2010 I packed my clothes in two bags and left my family and friends in California to work full time for the DREAM Act, a bill that you know well, and for which I have waited for many years. At that time I had nowhere to live but a friend lent me his chair for several months until I could rent a room.

My name is Saad Nabeel and I am writing to you from Bangladesh. Prior to my arrival in this nation, I lived in the United States for 15 years. My parents brought me to America at age three. It is the only home I know. I used to attend the University of Texas at Arlington with a full scholarship in Electrical Engineering. Through no fault of my own I was forced to leave my home, friends, possessions, and most importantly, my education behind.

The Spanish-language press continues to follow up on two big stories from last week: the release of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) memo asking agents to cancel deportations for a narrow class of immigrants, and the massacre of 72 Central and South American migrants in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Meanwhile, as Congress prepares to go back in session, DREAM Act advocates are tallying up their support in the Senate.

On May 17th, on the 56th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, I, along with Mohammad Abdollahi, Yahaira Carrillo and two others, became the first undocumented students to risk deportation by staging a sit-in inside Senator McCain's office in Tucson, Arizona, to demand the immediate passage of the DREAM Act. As a result of that sit-in we were arrested, turned over to ICE, and we now face deportation.

In May, my mother and I were picked up in an immigration raid in our home. I was told that in 2002, when I was just 12, I missed a court date at which I was ordered removed from this country. I've been in detention for three months, now, awaiting my deportation.

The Spanish-language press recognizes the success of the DREAM movement in getting officials to suspend certain deportations, but activists point out that students will still be deported until the federal government takes action to help them -- which President Obama told a fundraising dinner he would do "something" about after the November elections. Meanwhile, on the border, arrests are down, deaths are up, and residents feel safe, but Secure Communities continues to expand anyway.

La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language daily paper in the US, joins the chorus of those calling on Congress to pass the DREAM Act, as the Obama Administration affirms its commitment to the bill. Pro-immigrant groups continue to criticize Congress for passing another border bill instead of a real solution, and documents show that 47,000 people have been deported under the Secure Communities program in its 20 months of existence.

A lot has happened as we complete the third week of the DREAM Now Series. The DREAM Act picked up two new co-sponsors in the U.S. House: Mike Thompson (D-CA-1) and Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1). Two extremely important and influential organizations have also come out strongly in support of passing the DREAM Act as a downpayment on comprehensive immigration reform: the Center for American Progress and the AFL-CIO.

Here's the great news: Marlen was just granted what's known as "deferred action" for one year. She was scheduled to be deported on August 8th, but after a campaign initiated by DREAM Act activists, Marlen was allowed to stay with her family for another year. We asked you to fax DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, and you came through. In just 24 hours, we passed our goal of having 5,000 people fax DHS. As of today, you've sent nearly 20,000 faxes to the agency!

The demonstration yesterday by activists calling for passage of the DREAM Act, which would legalize young people who had completed at least two years of college or enlisted in the military (in addition to fulfilling other requirements), is one of the lead stories in the Spanish-language media this morning. And on the eve of the second hearing in the federal lawsuit against Arizona law SB 1070, that suit -- and the law it challenges -- also occupy the headlines.

With today's "graduation ceremony" for DREAM activists in Washington, questions resurface about how the bill legalizing undocumented young people will move forward. As the border prepares to receive National Guard troops, controversy remains over the death of Anastasio Hernández in Border Guard custody; and the list released in Utah last week purporting to identify undocumented immigrants has struck fear into the hearts of the entire Latino community there.

America's Voice is a proud founding partner of the new DREAM Now letter series, which launched today, July 19th, 2010. Please get involved by cross-posting DREAM Now letters to your blog, sharing them on facebook, or tweeting about them and including "@BarackObama" and "#dreamletters." We can't do this alone, but we can raise our voices together now.
