"There is a rich precedent supporting the service of non-citizens in the U.S. military. Since the Revolutionary War, non-citizens have enlisted in the armed forces for service during periods of national emergency. Today, about 35,000 non-citizens serve, and about 8,000 permanent resident aliens enllist every year. The DREAM Act represents an opportunity to expand this pool, to the advantage of military recruitment and readiness."

Via Culture Kitchen's Liza Sabater, Massachussetts Senator Scott Brown has come out with an ugly attack on the DREAM Act, attempting to smear Harvard University's President in the process. Of course, the irony is thick: the reason that ROTC is banned from Harvard's campus is that the program is not open to all students -- specifically, LGBT students are not able to participate.

"The best and the brightest of our nation's immigrant community – who want to go to college and serve in our military – just had the door slammed in their face by the GOP. The fight will continue, but today marks a new low for a party that claims to be the party of opportunity and freedom. Evidently, talented young immigrants are not included in their country club view of who deserves opportunity and freedom."

When Nelly was nine years old, she came to the United States with her parents. Scared and unable to speak the language, she was aware of one thing: that her parents came here to provide her with a better life, and that she would do all that she could to succeed. So she learned English, excelled at school, graduated at the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA, was elected class president, and even served as Cadet Commander of her high school's ROTC program – all while holding a job to support her family.

My name is Laura López and I am an undocumented resident of Napa, California. My parents brought me in 1989 to provide for me the American Dream. I was a year and eight months old. The plan was that they'd work and I'd study and go to college. Our hard work was supposed to merit us the American Dream. But my merit would be questioned for a lack of legal documentation.

Yesterday we pointed out that each year about 65,000 students graduate from high school with zero prospects for the future. They live in constant fear of being deported. The DREAM Act would change that. Seventy percent of Americans agree that it makes no moral or economic sense to spend taxpayer dollars arresting, jailing, and deporting youth who grew up in this country. The DREAM Act allows these young people to earn their citizenship through college or military service.

As we reported earlier, you all sent tens of thousands of messages to Congress and DHS this month. You asked them to stop the deportation of two upstanding people -- Marlen Moreno and Ivan Nikolov -- who would qualify to stay in the U.S. under the DREAM Act. With your help, Ivan and Marlen were given a stay of deportation. While this was wonderful news, it's still only a temporary fix. Marlen, Ivan, and thousands of young people like them will not be truly safe until Congress passes the DREAM Act -- and the clock is ticking.
