POLL: February 2013–Washington Post

  • 70% of all voters support creating a path to citizenship for the undocumented. Asked if they favored “creating a way for illegal immigrants already here to become citizens,” 70% of voters agreed that they favored the proposal.
  • 60% of Republicans support a path to citizenship on the merits. 60% of Republicans said they favored “creating a way” for the undocumented to become citizens.
  • 59% of all voters — including 61% of independents — supported a path to citizenship when it was identified as a proposal from President Obama. When told that “Obama has proposed” a path to citizenship, 59% of all voters said they agreed with the proposal, including 61% of independents. However, only 39% of Republicans agreed with the proposal when it was identified with President Obama — a 21-point drop from their support for citizenship on the merits.

From January 31st-February 10th, 2013, the Washington Post conducted a poll of 1,775 adults. 875 were asked about a path to citizenship on the merits and 900 were asked whether they disagreed with “Obama’s proposal.” The margin of error for the poll is +/-4%.
