Our Plan For Comprehensive ReformAmerica's Voice stands with the strong majority of Americans support real comprehensive immigration reform. We want our elected leaders in Washington to stop talking about the broken immigration system and start putting forward a practical solution that legalizes the undocumented workforce and fixes the holes in our immigration policy that created this problem in the first place. We are joined by hundreds of leaders from the law enforcement, local government, labor, civil rights, faith, and business communities who agree that comprehensive immigration reform is needed to restore our integrity as both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. Opponents of comprehensive immigration reform offer no practical "solutions" to the broken immigration system, beyond building a border fence and walling off America. For years, they have dominated the immigration debate with their simplistic sound bites. But Americans are tired of debate on this issue; they want action on real, comprehensive immigration reform |
Elements of Reform
Real reform would address the root causes of our broken immigration system to reduce illegal immigration and restore the rule of law. A workable immigration reform package that can succeed would combine the following elements, which work together to meet these fundamental goals:
- A program that requires those here illegally to get on the right side of the law by passing background checks, studying English, paying taxes, and working towards full U.S. citizenship
- Reunification of families separated by outdated immigration laws
- A commission to regulate the future flow of employment-based immigration so that workers' rights are protected and honest businesses are able to grow
- A crackdown on unscrupulous employers who hire undocumented workers and undermine their law-abiding competitors
- Smart and professional border enforcement, conducted in consultation with border communities
- Reform of current immigration enforcement practices, including the right to fair proceedings, humane treatment of immigration detainees, and respect for community policing
- Reduction of migration pressures in sending countries over time
Taken together, these elements of comprehensive immigration reform would secure the border, dramatically reduce illegal immigration, honor our nation's tradition of legal immigration, respect rights, and level the playing field for law-abiding employers and workers in the United States. These are the goals of America's Voice, and the goals of American voices that are demanding real reform. It is time for these voices to be heard.
