Tell AZ Gov, Jan Brewer: Veto The Bill!

Imagine every cop in the state being forced to act like controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio— or risk getting sued.

SB 1070 would force cops to interrogate — even jail — people, based on whether or not they “look” like they have their papers in order. Not only is this unconstitutional, it's wrong.

Our Arizona supporters have already sent hundreds of faxes directly to Governor Brewer's office. On Tuesday, we will deliver your petitions directly to the Governor, alongside local and national partners.

Please sign the petition to Gov. Brewer, and ask her to veto this horrifying bill:

Governor Brewer Veto SB1070

Dear Governor Brewer:

We are writing to strongly urge you to veto Senate Bill 1070, the so-called "Safe Neighborhoods" bill. The legislation would harm Arizona communities and is no substitute for real, comprehensive immigration reform.

It would lead to rampant racial profiling by forcing law enforcement officers to demand that legal residents and U.S. citizens "show their papers" solely because of the way they look or speak. It would also redirect law enforcement priorities away from serious criminals in order to fuel this overzealous drive to apprehend undocumented men, women and children.

This bill would push undocumented immigrants deeper into the shadows, and make our communities less safe as victims and community members become more unwilling to report crime. Today, too many Arizonans are afraid to call 911 because of the tactics of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and others. S.B. 1070 would make that problem worse.

Already, law enforcement groups such as the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police have raised serious concerns about the damage this bill would do to community policing and their relationships with members of the community.

Please do what’s right for Arizona. Veto S.B. 1070 and demand prompt action from the federal government to pass comprehensive immigration reform now.

Signed,
