WATCH: Jorge Ramos Talks Immigration on the Daily Show

Share This:

In case you missed it last night, Jorge Ramos’ interview with the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart is a must-watch.  Ramos was on to promote the new network he anchors–Fusion–but nearly his entire interview was about immigration reform and why both parties need to worry about passing it.

Ramos reminded Republicans that immigration is a gateway issue for Latino voters.  If the GOP wants to start winning a higher percentage of that vote than Mitt Romney did–if they ever want to win the White House again–they must pass reform.  As Ramos said:

Immigration reform is like a prerequesite for Latinos to see beyond whatever you’re talking about. For Republicans, they really have to pass reform for us to see beyond that. And it’s something personal. I’m an immigrant. Half of all Latinos in this country are immigrants. You can give me jobs and health care and everything, but if you’re saying ‘get out of this country,’ it’s not the best message.

Some of his harshest words, however, were reserved for President Obama and his record-high rate of deportations:

I think President Obama is finally doing the right thing, supporting immigration reform and fighting for immigration reform. However, the message is contradictory. He’s saying, ‘I want you here, I’m helping you. I want immigration reform.’ And at the same time, he’s deporting–he has deported–2 million people. No other president in the history of the United States has deported more people than President Barack Obama.

Until we have immigration reform, it’s really a shameful system that we have right now.
