Stephen Colbert Takes on American Heritage Dictionary, “Anchor Baby” Term

Late-night show host and satirist Stephen Colbert took on the anti-immigrant crowd again last night, when he devoted a segment to the recent American Heritage Dictionary / “anchor baby” controversy.

Here’s the story: the American Heritage Dictionary added the term “anchor baby” to its fifth edition publication, defining it as “a child born to a noncitizen mother in a country that grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil, especially such a child born to parents seeking to secure eventual citizenship for themselves and often other members of their family” but making no note of its disparaging and pernicious use.  The Immigration Policy Center, which Colbert notes is “a group that supports the far-left radical idea of having immigrants,” lodged a complaint, and the dictionary revised the “anchor baby” entry to note how it is used as an offensive term.

“Lexicowards!” Colbert howled in his segment, which you can view below.

Colbert then asked the dictionary to also add his idea for a new entry, “grappling baby,” where a mother in Mexico aims her birth canal at the U.S.-Mexico border so that her baby can launch out during birth into the United States.

“The Department of Homeland Security would be forced to send thousands of volleyball players to the border,” Colbert said, “to spike the babies back to Mexico.”
