‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: White House Meeting on CIR; Salvadoran TPS; Stop the Raids!

The Spanish-language media has its eyes on today’s White House meeting between President Barack Obama and Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who have been working on a comprehensive immigration reform proposal which would include a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. Univisión.com’s sub-headline reads “White House Seeks to Avoid Protests.” La Opinión (Los Angeles) offers details about Schumer’s potential bill, which would require those seeking to adjust their immigration status to pay minor fines and would prevent them from leaving the country. EFE and the AP have more.

The other hot topic, with coverage from EFE and Notimex, is a meeting between President Obama and El Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, at which Funes is expected to advocate for the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadoran nationals. About 250,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. are currently protected by TPS.

Saturday’s edition of El Diario Las Américas (Miami) included a column from Reverend Martín Añorga discussing the urgency of legalizing the undocumented and asking for an end to immigration raids: “To take men and women from their workplaces by force and pack them in vans to be summarily deported is an act that flies in the face of the traditional American spirit. We believe that until the moment arrives when Congress begins deliberation over immigration reform, the government should grant a respite to peaceable, law-abiding immigrant workers.”

America's Voice has started a new series, ‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration,to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English) of some of the best Spanish-language news.
