‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: SB 1070 Passed; Boycott Arizona; Window for CIR
The Spanish-language media focuses on the passage of Arizona state law SB 1070, which criminalizes undocumented immigrants, and its immediate effects: a boycott of Arizona businesses and renewed calls for comprehensive immigration reform.
SB 1070 passed. EFE reports that legal action is already being taken to prevent the law from being implemented, while La Crónica, EFE, Univision, and Yahoo News cover reactions to the law from the Catholic Church in Mexico and El Salvador and the Mexican government.
Boycott Arizona. Various media outlets refer to a planned boycott of Arizona to protest its passage of the law. La Opinión (Los Angeles), in an editorial titled “Say NO to Arizona” (“Diga ‘NO’ a Arizona”), writes:
“We express our outrage in the face of this abuse of power. We call for a boycott of all goods and services from Arizona and pledge to avoid tourism in the state as well. Let's send a signal of our disgust with an arrogant state government that asserts powers it does not have in order to persecute a minority population.”
El Diario-La Prensa (New York), La Opinión, and Televisa have more.
Window for CIR. In the wake of SB 1070, the urgency of passing federal immigration reform is a hot topic for newspapers and news services, including La Opinión and EFE, and websites. Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) referred to the issue on Sunday news program Al Punto with Jorge Ramos, saying that the window for debating reform would last from the end of May until the end of July.
In other news... EFE reports that the Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled that residents of the town of Freemont can vote on an initiative to regulate the number of immigrants coming into the town; El Nuevo Herald (Miami) publishes a special report titled “Deportations separate Cuban families.”
America's Voice has started a new series, “‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration,” to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English) of some of the best Spanish-language news.
