‘Qué pasa’ in Immigration: Members of Congress Debate Reform
Today, the AFL-CIO will host a forum in Los Angeles to debate immigration reform. La Opinión reports that the meeting, which will be held in LA’s historic Olvera Street neighborhood, will feature Representatives Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Judy Chu (D-CA); Bishop Alexander Salazar of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; LAPD Chief Charlie Beck; Angélica Salas, Executive Director of CHIRLA; and Maria Elena Durazo of the AFL-CIO.
A Notimex feature story notes that the White House is pushing privately for immigration reform. The article includes quotes from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, from a meeting with reporters last Friday.
Friday’s edition of San Diego’s La Prensa also included an op-ed column from Frank Sharry contradicting the conventional wisdom in Washington on immigration reform.
New America Media has picked up the English-language version of Maribel Hastings’ column covering reactions to Obama’s State of the Union address. The Spanish-language version has run in New York’s El Diario-La Prensa and other papers.
The Dallas daily Al Día dedicated one of its Saturday editorials to the presidential address and its implications for immigration reform. The paper writes: “Immigration is a very polarizing issue, and Obama knows that in a Congress in which support for the President’s proposals has faded, it would be a lit fuse. Various coalitions and groups, principally Latino, have begun a national campaign to pressure the White House and Congress to help create a new immigration system and pass a bill that would extend legal status to 12 million people.”
America's Voice has started a new series to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English), of some of the best Spanish-language news.
