‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: Outline Released; March on Sunday!; Arpaio on the Loose

On the eve of Sunday's march, other stories attracting the attention of the Spanish-language media include an op-ed from Senators Charles Schumer and Lindsey Graham sketching the outline of a bill for comprehensive immigration reform, and another round of raids being undertaken by Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona.

Outline released. The op-ed from Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), outlining the basis of an immigration reform bill, appears in today's edition of the Washington Post. President Barack Obama has released a statement supporting the Senators’ proposal. EFE, the AP, Reuters, El Universal and La Jornada have more on the story. EFE mentions that Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has stated that he wishes to seek common ground on reform.

March on Sunday! Media outlets give substantial coverage to mobilization across the country around Sunday’s march, with dispatches from EFE bureaus in Florida, California and North Carolina, La Opinión in Los Angeles, the AP’s New York bureau and Vívelo Hoy in Illinois.

El Financiero (Mexico), in an article called “Conservatives ask Obama to take leadership on immigration reform,” reprints statements from Representative Lincoln Díaz-Balart (R-FL), blaming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for failing to present a full reform bill as she waits for the Senate to take action. “It is unfortunate and unacceptable that Pelosi has not allowed” the lower house of Congress to take up the issue, said the Congressman, who reported he has been working with a bipartisan group to pass reform.

Arpaio on the loose. The AP reports that Sheriff Joe Arpaio is mounting a three-day immigration enforcement sweep over the weekend. In other enforcement news, ICE responds to accusations from El Diario-La Prensa regarding the treatment of undocumented detainees.

America's Voice has started a new series, “‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration,” to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English) of some of the best Spanish-language news.
