‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: More Border Troops; New Poll; Feds Take On 1070?

The Spanish-language press gives substantial coverage to President Obama’s announcement that he plans to send more National Guard troops to the border. Rumors that the Department of Justice will take action against Arizona's SB 1070 also receive press, as does a new poll by America's Voice shows that support for comprehensive immigration reform is stronger than support for the Arizona law.

More border troops. Obama's announcement came after a meeting with the Senate’s Republican caucus. EFE writes:

“(Frank) Sharry, of the organization America’s Voice, did not conceal his frustration as he said that Obama entered the “lion’s den” and challenged Republicans to work with him on immigration reform, but got nothing in return.”

Notimex’s article is headlined “Obama challenged for ‘rewarding’ Republican obstructionism.” AOL Latino publishes Sharry’s statement in its entirety, “Immigration reform: Obama rewards the people in its way,” as well as a blog post from Maribel Hastings of America's Voice: "National Guard to the border: more of the same." La Opinión (Los Angeles), El Diario-La Prensa (New York), Hoy (Chicago), Al Día (Philadelphia), and news agency DPA also quote Sharry.

New poll. Several news outlets cover a recent poll released by America’s Voice on immigration reform and Arizona law SB 1070. Sample headlines:

Oklahoma Spanish News: “New bipartisan poll: majority of voters support Arizona SB 1070, but also support immigration reform”

Milenio: “Support for immigration reform stronger than Arizona law”

EFE: “Some supporters of Arizona law more favorable to immigration reform than its critics”

Feds take on 1070? EFE, La Jornada and Notimex report on the possibility that the Department of Justice will take legal action against the implementation of Arizona SB 1070.

In other news... EFE reports that fifteen activists were detained after a civil-disobedience action in Chicago; Telemundo Chicago reports that Saturday’s protest against SB 1070 in Phoenix is estimated to draw 50,000 people; and Univision.com covers a roadside sign in Miami programmed with an anti-Latino message.

America's Voice has started a new series, “‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration,” to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English) of some of the best Spanish-language news.
