‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: March in March; Undocumented Left Out of Health Plan; Hate Crimes

The Spanish-language press continues to anticipate the march for immigration reform planned for March 21st in Washington. Notimex quotes Margarita Ramon of Inquilinos y Trabajadores (Tenants and Workers) saying: “We will demonstrate the power and the collective importance of this discontented community.”

Dallas, TX daily Al Día covers a meeting held in Austin in support of reform: “The purpose of the Texas Convention for Immigrant Integration was to send a message to President Obama, Congress and Texas legislators regarding the necessity of immigration reform.”

EFE’s Washington bureau reports that undocumented immigrants are excluded from the health-care reform plan unveiled by the Obama Administration this week. The article refers to the March 21st march and includes a selection from a recent column by Rafael Prieto of America’s Voice: “A grassroots movement may have killed the Wisconsin congressman (James Sensenbrenner)’s bill, but the immigrant cause continues to be an unresolved issue” in Washington.

New York’s El Diario-La Prensa reports that a judge has upheld hate crimes charges against some of those accused in the racially-motivated attack that led to the death of Ecuadorian national Manuel Lucero and injuries to Angel Loja in November 2008.
