‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: 37 More Arrests and Counting; Who’s In Charge?; Boycott…Sonora?
The Spanish-language press covers continued civil-disobedience actions and protests against SB 1070 and for immigration reform. Political reporters wonder who's setting the agenda in Washington, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio wants to boycott Sonora back.
37 more arrests and counting. El Diario-La Prensa (New York) and EFE cover a civil-disobedience action in New York during which 37 activists were arrested. The protesters denounced Arizona SB 1070 and called for immigration reform. La Opinión (Los Angeles) and the AP cover preparations for Saturday’s protest against SB 1070 in Phoenix, reporting that union leaders in California have announced that they plan to travel without papers to Arizona for the protest.
Who's in charge? La Opinión reports that President Obama plans to meet today with Republican Senators, with immigration reform one of the ítems on his agenda. America’s Voice publishes (and AOL Latino reprints) the Maribel Hastings column “Obama and the numbers,” which analyzes the political situation in Washington facing the immigration issue. Hoy (Chicago) writes an editorial titled: “Is Rahm Emanuel the obstacle to immigration reform?” And El Diario-La Prensa asks in an editorial, “Who’s in charge in Washington?”
Boycott...Sonora? EFE and the AP report that Sheriff Joe Arpaio is calling for a boycott of neighboring Mexican state Sonora in retaliation for the boycott against Arizona in the wake of SB 1070.
In other news... A Terra feature retraces the route of a Mexican immigrant who walked almost 3,000 miles, from Los Angeles to Washington, for immigration reform; Al Día (Philadelphia) covers a demonstration against a Pennsylvania bill similar to SB 1070, and EFE reports on a similar protest in North Carolina.
America's Voice has started a new series, “‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration,” to bring Spanish-language coverage of immigration and politics to a wider audience. Look for daily roundups (in English) of some of the best Spanish-language news.
