Kos: Immigration reform enjoys dominant support

Daily KosIt's not just the Wall Street Journal.  Kos, founder of the progressive political site Daily Kos, digs into our new polling figures today in a post called, "Immigration reform enjoys dominant support."

So check it -- conventional wisdom is that tough economic times generates anti-immigrant sentiment, but these numbers are stellar. And that's just asking people about "comprehensive immigration reform". Look what happens when they are told what that actually means:

One version of immigration reform that people have discussed would take a comprehensive approach. It would secure the border, crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, and require illegal immigrants to register for legal immigration status, pay back taxes, and learn English in order to be eligible for U.S. citizenship. Would you ... Congress passing this proposal?

That's a stunning 29-point shift, with well over a majority of respondents "strongly approving". The Minutemen crowd, no matter how much noise it might make, is fringier than fringe.

Stunning is a good way to put it. One challenge, this polling shows, is just getting the message out to people that there is a common-sense solution on the table.

I don’t believe for one minute that this poll is accurate or a true indication of how the majority of Americans feel about illegal immigration.  I would love to know the nationalities and backgrounds of these people and whether they were citizens. It’s so easy to skew polls.  I am not racist and I don’t blame illegals for our economic problems, but I don’t agree with the comprehensive reform being shoved down our throats.  I believe our laws should be enforced and our border secured.  Granting amnesty will only encourage more to come expecting another amnesty down the line. Ther are good reasons for immigration law and we are supposedly “a nation of laws”, as our President has always said.  We can’t pick and choose laws to enforce and laws to ignore.  No one has ever asked me or anyone I know how we feel about this issue, nor has anyone ever answered my letters regarding this issue, which I find disturbing.  We need to take care of our citizens and not place even more burdens on them, which will happen with this massive influx into they system.  My poll comes up with a much different outcome than yours and is probably more accurate.  What is being proposed has so many outrageous points that it is hard for me to comprehend our country would even consider this.  don’t mistake me for a conservative Republican for I definitely am not one.  I was a Democrat for 40 yeaqrs and now am an Independent.  I voted and campaigned for President Obama, though I disagreed with him on this issue.  Let’s be honest about what is best for this country and our citizens.  Take an honest poll of people or put the measure on a ballot stte by state and really see the truth, rather than try to push this on us without our consent.  No one seems to be listening to us as usual.  Legal immigration is the way to go and should be improved, but we can’t overwhelm our nation with this mess that is being pushed through.  I reallydon’t belive in the accuracy of your poll and I am sure there are others that would come out differently depending on the questions and people involved.

South Florida needs some kind of federal immigration policy. I think the new administration will get one. This is one subject where you will never get a bill that will please everyone but the downside of no law is worse.
