Pew Hispanic Center is out with a new poll. Though they want to focus on letting us know that the "Public Favors Tougher Border Controls and Path to Citizenship" (we already knew that), more relevant to current immigration news is this: Americans don't want to change the 14th Amendment's provision on birthright citizenship.

Yesterday, we learned that President Obama believes Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. Also, his administration will no longer defend the law in pending court cases. Section 3 of DOMA defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman under federal law purposes, which also means that there [...]

For the past couple years, Republicans on Capitol Hill and across the country have been spitting out talking points about the need for stronger "border security." None of them will actually define what it means to "secure the border," but we just know that in their world, there's never enough border security.

We've just learned from Border Action that the author of the infamous (and unconstitutional) SB 1070, Senator Russell Pearce, has introduced a new souped up anti-immigration bill for 2011. The new legislation, SB 1611, which was just introduced, is on a fast track.

The American people want leadership and solutions on the immigration issue, but what they've been getting from Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) is flip-flopping and hypocrisy. Instead of taking the lead towards solutions, Cornyn talks about supporting immigration reform in public, while undermining legislative efforts in Congress.

As Arizona ramps up to finish off what little funds the state has left on another piece of hateful legislation aimed at revoking the citizenship of children born to undocumented immigrants, a few young voices took to the stand to tell the assembly what they really needs to focus on, and why.

Move over, Jan Brewer, and make room for Kansas GOP Representative, Connie O'Brien. Unlike Brewer, who openly admitted she does not know what an undocumented person looks like (and still had the audacity to sign SB 1070 into law), Representative O'Brien thinks she knows.

Last week, the latest ImpreMedia - Latino Decisions Tracking poll showed that immigration is a top issue for 47% of Latino voters. That's an impressive figure. However, it's also important to keep in mind that immigration reform has the support of a broad majority of voters, not just Latinos. The latest DailyKos tracking poll proves the point -- again.

America's Voice Education Fund released a report today breaking the GOP code on immigration. The PR-friendly phrase "attrition through enforcement" popularly used by the House Immigration Subcommittee is actually a euphemism for mass deportation.

Finally, after nearly two years, a jury in Pima County, Arizona convicted Minuteman member Shawna Forde for her role in the murders of 9 year-old Brisenia Flores and her father, Raul. Elisa Foley from the Huffington Post reports: A jury convicted Forde of planning and executing the raid that led to the deaths of Raul and Brisenia Flores, and of the attempted murder of Gina Gonzales, the child's mother (she survived the attack). Forde was also convicted on two counts of aggravated assault and counts of burglary, armed robbery and aggravated robbery.

The immigrant bashing rhetoric from the nativist wing of the Republican Party was on full display this past weekend in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Showing no concerns about alienating the fastest growing voting demographic, the event showcased some of the worst of the worst, including Rep. Steve King and Tom Tancredo.

John and Joan Nkata are like any other hard-working immigrant family. After arriving here legally from Malawi on an education visa in 1990 with their then-11 month old and 4 year old daughters, Dominique and Tapiwa, the Nkata's were finally issued permanent resident status in 2009. The Nkata's successfully argued that their deportation would cause extreme hardship to their third daughter, Maria, a US citizen who was born in Cincinnati's Good Samaritan Hospital.
The glitch? Since their two elder daughters, Tapiwa, age 25, and Dominique, age 21, don't have a "qualifying relative," the judge refuses to address their claims for legal permanent status.

Governor Jan Brewer is relentless. Having squandered many of her State's resources on a pointless, racist immigration bill, she is now countersuing the federal government for their inaction on curbing illegal immigration in the State. Andrea Nill from Think Progress writes yesterday:
Today, Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ) announced that she is filing a countersuit against the federal government on behalf of the state of Arizona

In a press conference late last year, President Obama mentioned that one of his biggest regrets for 2010 was Congress’ inability to come together to pass the DREAM Act. Obama has, time and time again, promised to pass meaningful immigration reform. That obviously hasn’t happened. Instead, advocates are worried about the increase in deportations over [...]

For the past week, there's been an intense focus on the disturbing words of Alabama State Senator Scott Beason who said, in a speech on immigration:

For those of you who don't know, E-Verify is part of a Republicans' strategy of expelling 11 million undocumented immigrants and their families from the country. However, if the program worked as Reps. Smith, Gallegly, and King hope, the GOP would essentially be deporting the entire U.S. agriculture industry and send more of our nation's food supply—and jobs--overseas.

In Washington, there's been woefully little progress on solving the problems associated with unauthorized immigration. We got further proof today. Even in a reliably red state, like Tennessee, there's strong support for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
