Yesterday, the President of the AFL-CIO Richard Trumka and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis sat down to talk about a key workers' rights issue: comprehensive immigration reform. If last week's House hearing on "The Ethical Imperative for Immigration Reform" is any indication, Republicans have chosen to ignore the conservative Evangelicals who support immigration reform and rely on part-time anti-immigrant "experts" instead. When Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, Mathew Staver of Liberty Counsel and Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops preached the consensus view of real clergy and faith communities across America that just and humane immigration reform is an urgent moral imperative, the Republican minority called up James R. Edwards, an "expert in everything" for the anti-immigrant "we think so" tank the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).

What does Arizona law SB 1070 have to do with the lettuce crop in Yuma? At first glance, not a lot. But when the harvest season for lettuce and other vegetables comes around in November, that could change.
If SB 1070 is implemented, many farmworkers without legal immigration status—or with it—could decide not to go to Arizona out of fear, causing growers to face a shortage of field hands. This, in turn, would affect the amount of vegetables that can be harvested, and ultimately their prices to consumers.

At a time in which the Arizona GOP has made it acceptable for American citizens to go on witch-hunts for undocumented immigrants (i.e. suing police if they don't profile people based on shoes, accents, and skin color), comes this highly disturbing story out of Utah. The New York Times' Kirk Johnson reports, in "'Immigrant' List Sets Off Fears:" A list of 1,300 Utah residents described as illegal immigrants has sown fear among some Hispanics here, and prompted an investigation into its origins and dissemination.

With days left to go, Organizers are in a race against the clock to minimize the bill's impact on immigrant communities.
