Hulshof, Nixon clash over spending plans
10/25/08 | St. Louis Post-Dispatch | Republican Kenny Hulshof mixed his themes in the final debate in the governor's race Friday night, invoking 'Joe the Plumber' and suggesting Democrat Jay Nixon was 'all hat and no cattle.' Sharpening his attacks against Nixon, Hulshof said the state couldn't afford the attorney general's proposals. The debate covered little new territory, with the two candidates mostly sticking to their scripts with less than two weeks left in the election. They discussed illegal immigration, taxes, health care, education and spending. | Read the story
Scrambling the red states; Senate races in the South
10/25/08 | The Economist | During his first term, Georgia's senator ruffled some feathers among Republicans with his support for bipartisan immigration reform. But Georgia is a conservative state, and the Democratic challenger, a former state representative called Jim Martin, is a mild-mannered fellow who lags in money and name recognition. So Republicans must be annoyed that the race is now nearly tied. An October 17th poll from Research 2000 has Mr Chambliss up by just two points. | Read the story

RETURN INCUMBENTS TO THE HOUSE; OUR VIEW
10/24/08 | Hartford Courant | We endorse 21-year Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, who lives in Bridgeport, both because of what he is and what he represents. He is the last Republican House member from New England, but more important, one of the last Republican moderates in Congress... He has one of the best ideas we've seen for immigration reform, a 'blue card' granting legal, though noncitizen, status to undocumented workers who don't have criminal records. | Read the story

The sheriff hinted there could be a blitz of new ads hitting the airwaves in the final two weeks but would not give specifics, saying, 'I'm not going to tip off my opponent about what I'm doing.'…Those dollars funded television commercials in which Thomas and Arpaio tout their illegal immigration enforcement and a campaign mailer that accused Thomas' challenger, Democrat Tim Nelson, of being opposed to the death penalty. | Read the story
